The next two posts will feature the reigning queen of New Jersey farm stands, and perhaps, the most notable variety of Jersey fresh produce: the gorgeous and flavorsome "Jersey" tomato.  As I made my way through the market this week, a spectrum of sun-ripened heirloom varieties in assorted shapes and sizes danced out of the farmer's crates, flaunting their bold colors like proud peacocks, and instantly winning a place in my basket.  When tomatoes are this fresh, local, and ripe, I prefer to take a "no fuss, no muss" approach and showcase them in their natural juicy state.   Read more »

Good day, food lovers!  I hope your Memorial Day weekend was filled with cool summer drinks, smoky barbecue, and maybe even some toes in the sand.  Hopefully, you were more prepared to resume the grind than I was on this lovely Tuesday (not at all).  It seems that the better my weekends get, the harder it is to come back to the 9 – 5 reality that supports this lifestyle.  Kind of like a “fun hangover.”  Anyone else feel this way?  Nevertheless, I had a fabulous long weekend consisting of early morning workouts, fishing with the fam, a few sessions at the beach, and a couple of first class barbecues. At last,  the Northeast weather finally caught up with the season and the frost blanketing Asbury Park has thawed.  The boardwalk is filled with runners stripped of their fleece hats and gloves, Ocean Avenue is paved with leather-clad bikers out for a joyride, and the beaches are sprinkled with the die-hard sunworshippers paying homage to their long lost friend. Spring at the Jersey shore is a cherished time to me, but I speculate it’s especially welcome by the broader population, as well, after this year’s frigid and tumultuous winter. It means Havaianas, rolled up jeans, and tank tops every day from now until it’s officially summer.  It means loading up the cooler for beach side picnics, consistently perfect running weather (not too hot, not too cold),  and late Sunday afternoons on the sand long after the daytrippers peel out.
